Salerno

Salerno is a wonderful town situated in the center of the Mediterranean and 60% of the territory of the province is protected by UNESCO.

Because of its geographical position underwent influences of Arab and Greek-Byzantine cultures, but it reaches its maximum splendor during the Norman period, during which it was also established the School of Medicine - Scuola Medica Salernitana -, that is the center of medical studies oldest in Europe,.

The old town of Salerno, whit rich palaces and churches of Lombard and Norman, is one of the best preserved and restored in Italy.

The Arechi Castle overlooking the city became very important with Prince Arechi II, while the Duomo of Salerno, founded by Robert Guiscard, was built on an early Christian church, built in turn on the ruins of a Roman temple.

West Salerno facing the bay, to the north lies the Amalfi Coast Amalfi Coast, famous throughout the world for its beauty, while to the south it meets one of Europe's largest nature reserves the National Park of Cilento, Vallo di Diano e Alburni.

The hinterland of the province of Salerno is rich in protected areas where you can find the natural environment intact and untouched.



Nature and landscapes

The coasts of the Province of Salerno, the Amalfi Coast and the Cilento coast, are both recognized World Heritage  by NESCO, and are characterized respectively by woanderful landscapes and clear sea. The Cilento Coast is part of the National Park of Cilento and Vallo of Diano, also recognized biosphere reserve and first geopark, between the Italian national parks.


The territory presents four other regional parks (Regional Park of Piacentini MountainsWWF Oasis of DiecimareSarno River Regional ParkRegional Park of the Lattari Mountains), a State Natural Reserve (Ferriere Valley), two Regional Natural Reserves (Sele Mouth-Tanagro and Eremit a Mountains), two marine protected areas (Punta Campanella and Santa Maria di Castellabate and Punta Licosa), and finally the sanctuaries of Mount Polveracchio e di Persano.

Campania is rich in volcanic area between Ischia, Campi Flegrei and Vesuvio. Due to its volcanic origin, the region has many natural hot springs, which were used since ancient times as a cure for various ills. The most famous are those of the island of Ischia, an island well connected to Salerno.



Archeology

Salerno is surrounded by archaeological sites among the most famous in the world, recognized by UNESCO "World Heritage Site".

The Archeological Areas of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Torre Annunziata are among the best examples of Roman life, as well as the best-preserved cities of the time, while the Archeological sites of Paestum and Velia, in excellent condition, are considered unique examples of Magna Graecia.



Events

Salerno and a city full of events.

Among the religious celebrations to mention the feast of the "Patron saint", with procession and marching bands, and the "Fair of the Found Crucifix" that includes performances, historical re-enactments and markets.

The Opera House "Giuseppe Verdi" has a full calendar of events, while in the event “Luci d’artista” are exhibited during Christmas artwork bright positioned in the streets and gardens of the city.

In Amalfi Coast, it is not to be missed the "Ravello Festival" with its concerts and in particular the dawn concert event - symbol of the Festival. In Amalfi takes place the "Historical Regatta of Maritime Republics", a sporting event of historical re-enactment on the ancient rivalry between Genoa, Venice, Pisa and Amalfi.

A few kilometers from Salerno, in Giffoni Valle Piana, is held the "Giffoni Film Festival " the largest international event for the promotion of children's films.
